Team

The consortium brings together three research units — IHPST, ISIR (Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence) and THALIM — and some thirty researchers in philosophy, robotics, cognitive science, law, art history and theory, and literature. Four post-doctoral researchers join the project.

Philippe Huneman

Scientific coordinator · WP1 lead

IHPST — CNRS / Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne

CNRS research professor and philosopher of biology. Trained in mathematics and then philosophy, he works on biological agency, explanation in evolutionary biology and ecology, and the relations between metaphysics and biology. His books include Métaphysique et biologie (Kimé, 2008) and Death. Perspectives from the Philosophy of Biology (Palgrave, 2023); he co-edits the series History, Philosophy & Theory in Life Sciences (Springer).

Mehdi Khamassi

WP2 co-lead

ISIR / SCAI — CNRS / Sorbonne Université

CNRS research professor at the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics, working at the interface of neuroscience, artificial intelligence and robotics. His research addresses decision-making and reinforcement learning in animals and robots, the role of social rewards in learning, and the ethical questions raised by autonomous machine decision-making. He is editor-in-chief of Intellectica and edited Neurosciences cognitives (De Boeck, 2021).

Cédric Paternotte

WP2 co-lead

Sorbonne Université — UFR de philosophie (SND)

Associate professor of philosophy at Sorbonne Université. His research in the philosophy of the social sciences addresses collective action, shared intention and group rationality, at the crossroads of philosophy of action, game theory and cognitive science.

Carina Prunkl

WP3 lead

Université d'Utrecht — chercheuse associée à l'IHPST

Philosopher specialising in the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence. Formerly a research fellow at the University of Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI, she works on the impact of AI on human autonomy — distinguishing autonomy-as-agency from autonomy-as-authenticity — and on accountability mechanisms for automated systems.

Raja Chatila

WP5 co-lead

ISIR — Sorbonne Université

Professor emeritus of robotics, artificial intelligence and ethics at Sorbonne Université and former director of ISIR. His research addresses perception and decision-making in autonomous robots, human–robot interaction and the ethics of intelligent systems; he chaired the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.
